Ernesto Moves North, Newfoundland Faces Challenges

As Tropical Storm Ernesto continues to move northwards away from impacted Newfoundland, the region is experiencing the aftermath and preparing for further potential challenges. The storm has already struck Bermuda with high winds and heavy rains. However, the residual weather shifts are leading to moderate to rough surf across the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia and the southern and southeastern coast of Newfoundland. Therefore, the Canadian Hurricane Centre has issued warnings about the potential surf hazard and rip currents. The centre is advising beachgoers and residents of the regions to act with caution and take preventative measures.

At the moment, the tropical storm is expected to approach the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland late Monday night and will by then have transitioned into a post tropical storm. The warning from the Canadian Hurricane Centre suggests that Avalon to Bonavista, and the Burin peninsulas will experience rain and wind due to the passage of the storm. The estimates suggest that the wind speeds will reach up to 100 km/h in the southeastern Avalon Peninsula. The rainfalls in the areas are not anticipated to be heavy, however, the quick movement of the system will bring hazards of coastal flooding. There is also potential for minor dock damage caused by the intensity of the storm surge.

In addition to the environmental concerns, the residents of Newfoundland are also mourning the loss of Randy Snow, one of the biggest legends of broadcasting in the region. Sixty-one years old Snow has died on Friday. Hailing from Gander, the voice of OZFM has long been contributing to the media scene of Newfoundland. His charming voice and cheerful personality made him a household name in the province. With his passing, the broadcasting scene in Newfoundland has lost a truly remarkable individual.
