Fatal Accident on Interstate 395 Claims a Life

Approximately around 10:20 p.m. late Monday night, a fatal accident resulted in the death of a woman and left a man with life-threatening injuries on Interstate 395 in Lisbon, Connecticut. According to the sources, the car, Dodge Ram Wagon, went off the road and into the bridge abutment near the Preston Allen Road overpass between exits 18 and 19 on the northbound side and caught fire.

The state police identified 33-year-old Anjelly Berrios of Plainfield as the dead passenger and reported that the driver was taken to Backus Hospital with serious life-threatening injuries. As for the cause of the crash, it remains under investigation at the moment, and the witnesses to the accident are encouraged to contact the police. The crash is one of the many emergency-related incidents that happened in Connecticut this week.

This whole week can be remembered in Connecticut as primarily an “emergency week” for various emergencies the region had to face over the last seven days. Over the weekend, Connecticut had severe bad weather in the western part of the state. The storms and rains caused rivers and brooks to overflow their banks. There were reports that in Oxford, Connecticut, 19 houses and a dog were evacuated by the Beacon Falls firefighters due to the flooding of the Naugatuck River. In other towns, the storms almost wiped away the local infrastructure and houses, with destroyed roads and electric lines being only a part of the damage that has been done. As a result, much of the debris was cleared in the course of this week, and some towns are still cleaning up the mess left by the storms.

Moreover, North Haven police have issued a shelter-in-place order for the residents of parts of the Cloudland and Sugar Hill Road due to a “family issue” that went through the investigation. The overall emergency alert in the region makes the accidents and bad weather conditions come even more unexpected and thus more difficult to handle. The car crash is also yet to be investigated to determine all the factors that caused it.

Overall, the events that took place in Connecticut over the past week signal the region’s vulnerability to various forms of emergencies, ranging from car accidents caused by yet inexplicable reasons to natural disasters of great magnitude leaving several towns without electricity or roads. The level of emergency preparedness and the way the residents and the emergency staff of Connecticut reacted and is reacting to the new threats may become a substantial part of the considerations that will have to take place to improve the overall condition of the state’s emergency preparedness. For example, the potential safety problems of the abutment the Dodge Ram Wagon crashed into may be the subject of future discussion to avoid a similar scenario. The results of the ongoing investigations are still yet to be seen, but it is still possible to observe some of the lessons early on.
