During a recent conference at the Australian National University, there have been harsh criticisms on the Albanese government with regard to the AUKUS agreement. While speaking about the trilateral security pact made between Australia, the UK, and the US, former Labor foreign minister, Gareth Evans, has not been polite to the Defence Minister, Richard Marles. Evan’s remarks on the position, which Marles had assumed with regard to the alliance, were as follows, which were bitter to taste. Marles’ enthrall to the United States has been, “so dewy-eyed as to defy parody”.

It was surprising that such harsh criticisms, which came from a former diplomat have sparked debates among academicians, policy makers, and other publics. As such, the debates have dwelt so much on the policy of the Australian government with the AUKUS agreement. To some extent, the debates have been so political, as they have posed the question whether Australia should sign agreements with other nations based on the confronting and collectivist ideologies. The discussions have demonstrated that the AUKUS agreement is a reflection of Deng’s politics whereby personality cults are the orders of the day.
