Global Reading Trends and Goodreads' Constant Tracking

This week’s Goodreads most-read list is a combination of old favorites returning and intriguing international oddities. Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us resurfaces in the top five, sparked by its cinematic adaptation and to no surprise as it has been a hit year after year. The novel is at 16,700 Goodreads users marking it as read this week and seems it’s still charming a global audience.

Internationally, reading tastes continue to diverge in intriguing ways. In Poland, the most read is Marta Bijan’s Wakacje Pod Morzem, a YA horror novel not available in English yet. So, in this case, it may be that certain types of books are trending in their home countries. Interestingly, in Colombia and New Zealand Frieda McFadden’s The Housemaid collection interests the readers with other kinds of reads, such as Taylor Jenkins Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Mist and Fury, respectively. The Housemaid series dominate not only the U.S. chart again but the international as well with Dori Carter’s The Housemaid Is Watching topping this week. Fueled by the growing number of charting bestsellers, the global patterns of what books are read where appear to be changing, but Goodreads remains the constant place to keep track of wherever you are.
