Megan Rapinoe Champions ‘Sport Your Period’ Initiative to Normalize Menstruation in Sport

Knix, the undergarment brand, has collaborated with the soccer star Megan Rapinoe in an attempt to combat the stigma of period in sport with the ‘Sport Your Period’ campaign. The budding campaign, which comes ahead of the Paris Olympics, reflects the need for a transformation in the dialogue on menstrual health in the athletic community.

Megan Rapinoe, who has won an Olympic gold as well as led the US Women National Team in clinching two world cups, stars in a campaign film that calls for an overhaul in the conversations around the natural biological cycle. However, it is important to underscore that conversations around menstruation need to be learned to create an environment of inclusivity that supports and encourages the youth to actively participate in sports. This was never heard of, and a report by Knix and CanFund revealed that 99% of women have had to compete during the international events of the cycle but cannot inform their coach. Phylicia George, a former Olympian, speaks of a need to hold the conversations, embrace, and sport the period.

While the evident initiative would lead to the empowerment of the UK athletes and ensure that young athletes would confidently participate in the sport without the imposition of period stigma barriers, the campaign undertakes even across the pond from the US. However, the boxing legend keeps notes of what would have been a backstory of coddling by the dad.
