Mount Etna Eruption Threatens Lives and Sparks Study

Europe’s most active volcano, Mount Etna, located on the Italian island of Sicily, provided a spectacular, fiery view earlier this week. Indeed, it erupted, and flows of lava raced down the 3,300-metre caldera as it spewed ash into the blue sky. According to the Independent’s report, in response to the eruption, “Italy’s Civil Protection agency raised the alert level to ‘yellow’ in the surrounding areas”.

The latter spectacle of flowing lava and the ash plume in masked by it only served to remind the people of the region about the ever-present volcanic activity on Etna. Consequently, while the lives of the residents and the tourists who visited it remained under threat, geologists and volcanologists continued the study of the forces of nature behind the eruption. Overall, one could argue that officials will have to raise the alarm again to ensure that the threat does not become more tangible and acts towards the security of the locals and visitors are prompt.
