Oswaldo Cabrera Shines Amid Jazz Chisholm Jr. Injury

After Jazz Chisholm Jr. had to leave the game and was sidelined with injury, New York Yankees utility player Oswaldo Cabrera had to be turned to and, more importantly, he has delivered. Chisholm, who has been tremendous asset for the Yankees team ever since it acquired him, was placed on the 10-day IL retroactive to August 13 with a UCL sprain in his left elbow. The injury happened during a slide into home plate in the game against chicago white sox.

He has not been entirely shut down, and there is optimism about his health in the long run. “When I come off the IL, and I think it’s 100 percent realistic, I can play”. There is no immediate plans for surgery but the term to recover from it would put much of his next season into jeopardy.

Cabrera has been taking every opportunity to replace Chisholm, mostly against right-handed pitchers. As a result, in a disregarded game against Detroit Tigers, Cabrera has collected two of the Yankees’ four hits and made multiple important defensive plays. However, for the past month, Cabrera has been playing spectacularly on an even larger stage. In past 30 games, and he started in 19 of those, he has made a batting average of.304 and an OPS of.825.

His manager Aaron Boone is supportive of his efforts. “He’s just such a good teammate, such a good guy to have on the team. He’s obviously been playing really well over the last month when he’s had his opportunities,” he shared. “The defensive versatility he provides [is important], but he’s been really stringing together a lot of good games at the plate as well”. Thus, even though Yankees have to pass through another challenging time, they still have semblance of depth on the bench and optimism for Chisholm’s return only further drives the competitive edge.
