Rose of Tralee Celebrates 64 Years of Irish Heritage

A beloved symbol of Ireland’s cultural fabric, The Rose of Tralee is back on Tuesday night on RTE to capture the hearts of audiences. Now in its 64th year, the festival continues to celebrate the Irish diaspora though a rich tapestry of talent and stories. Participants from the USA, Australia, Dubai, and Ireland unite under their Irish heritage to compete and entertain for the coveted prize. Co-hosted by Kathryn Thomas and Dáithí Ó Sé, the festival will see the final 14 contestants of the Rose of Tralee’s talent display and personal stories at the Dome in the Kerry Sports Academy at the MTU.

The festival serves as a reminder of the unique and wonderful stories that the women have to tell, while also integrating modern Irish society and pop culture as demonstrated by the performance of Instagram sensation Garron Noone. The Galway native, known for comedic skits and blending Irish classics with a modern swing, is set to perform alongside Irish polka queen Sharon Shannon. The advent of such performances and social media sensation within the festival indicates a shift towards modern entertainment, drawing a fine line between the traditional and the rapidly changing. The Roses of Tralee is a platform for young Irish women of diaspora to tell their story, while also reaching a wider audience due to the modern components of the show.

I am partial to Rachel Hastings, the Rose of Roscommon from Ballyforan. A lecturer in Home Economics and a farming influencer, Rachel dreams of promoting ‘Education for Sustainable and Responsible Living,’ having also previously worked on the Sharon Project in Zambia. Her plans echo the global sentiments about sustainability, responsible living, and environmental education. The shift away from purely cultural influence towards education and sustainability serves to benefit wider circles in society and international audiences.

The Rose of Tralee acts as a reminder of ongoing social developments both in Ireland and throughout the world. With time, the festival will only continue incorporating more modern entertainment types and hosting Roses with even more pressing issues of global significance. Thus, The Rose of Tralee will continue attracting international attention on one of Ireland’s most beloved traditions, while promoting an increasing number of modern vistas for its Roses to take in order to serve an advocacy purpose.
