Saudi Crown Prince's Diplomatic Efforts with Israel Face Risks

According to a recent report by Politico, the diplomatic efforts of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to cultivate relations with Israel are fraught with sizable risks. A report delivered to U.S. Congress states that the Crown Prince is in grave danger due to the highly debatable nature of his position regarding the Middle East diplomacy. Routinely, these risks appear to be unavoidable for the Crown Prince, yet, he is determined to continue these relations because they are of critical importance to the kingdom’s future.

Meanwhile, it should be pointed out that the Israeli governmental authorities are hardly impressed with the Crown Prince’s conditions, and apparently, the Palestinian state issue remains irrevocably unsettled and must be addressed before the normalization. Conducting massive military campaigns in the Gaza Strip, Israel demonstrates its potent determination to ignore the condition, once again signaling its is readiness to facilitate the improvement of its relations with Saudi Arabia. Under another possible explanation, the Israeli policies towards the Palestinians are sheltered by the UAE-Israeli peace agreement made in 2020.

Obviously, shortly after John Kirby’s remarks regarding the positive trends in the Saudi-Israeli normalization in late May 2021, the Al Saud family reconfirmed its position regarding the Palestinian state, no other agreements with the Jewish state being possible. The evolution of this highly controversial situation can hardly be predicted, but it is clear that its implications for regional stability and peace order are substantial.
