Severe Listeria Outbreak Linked to Plant-Based Milks

The severe Listeria outbreak in Ontario, which had caused three fatalities and 20 infections, set from plant-based milk products. That is why a recall was initiated in the entire country by the Canadia Food Inspectio Agency. The agency started to recall Silk and Great Value brands of plant-based milk products on July 8 as the whole investigation of the case was taking since August 2023.

The Food Inspectio Agency explains that it took so much time to identify which products were poisoned as Listeria rarely appears in plant-based drinks which also has a long incubation period. This summer the source of the product was finally identified and it appeared that this plant was located on a third-party facility in Pickering, Ontario. Danone Canada used to use the production line of this facility, and it was closed since the 6th of July 2023.

The recalled product is Silk milk of the various type and Great Value almond milk, which has the specific product code. It is a very rare case when Listeria can appear in almond milk or other plant-based milk products, and people consume them as really safe drink alternatives. Currently, Danone told that it has started to test its product more often and the production process was resumed on different lines with more enhanced safety measures.
