Significant Rise in Parvovirus B19 Activity Reported

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned of a significant increase in parvovirus B19 activity, known as fifth disease. While this respiratory virus causing droplet transmission has demonstrated low numbers of cases as the result of severe COVID-19 protective measures, recent statistics show hostile reoccurrence. The CDC showcases significant rises in positive test rates and at-risk complications for pregnant women and sickle cell disease sufferers.

Particularly, a 10% rate of results for recent infection antibodies was observed in June, with children between 5 years to 9 years being the most affected. The parvovirus B19 force is the driving factor for diseases like aplastic anemia and adverse fetal outcomes. As there is no vaccine for the disease, the health organization is urging to follow the routine of COVID-19 precautions, including hand sanitization and remaining indoors while being sick. It is even more crucial for at-risk communities, like pregnant women, persons with suppressed immune systems, and chronic hemolytic conditions.
