Trey Lance's Performance Sparks Debate in Cowboys' Preseason

During the Dallas Cowboys’ preseason finale against the los angeles chargers, Trey Lance has shown both his potential and some worrying inconsistencies. Although the team lost 26-19, Lance’s play was a central part of the game, displaying his strengths and weaknesses as a quarterback coming off the bench behind the proven starters.

By completing 33 out of 48 passes for 323 yards, Lance showed that he can make a sizeable play, including a 25-yard pass to wide receiver Tyron Billy-Johnson, moving the chains and animating the AT&T Stadium crowd. Further, he led the game in rushing, concluding with 90 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown run. Still, there were five interceptions thrown and a couple of fumbles, and although both were recovered, these mistakes have prevented Lance from elevating his game.

The young quarterback’s performance in the game was a good illustration of an emerging pattern, as he showed that he is capable of pushing the ball downfield more effectively than in the important games featuring starting defensive linups. His pass to Ryan Flournoy for 11 yards ended the 65-yard drive and showed how he can lead sustained efforts on the offense, unlike the other injured starter.

Still, the turnovers tell a different story, with safety Tony Jefferson and linebacker Tre-Mon Morris-Brash capitalizing on Lance’s mistakes to intercept the ball, with the first throwing a pick six. Therefore, it is clear that, while Lance is a talented player with a lot of potential and a somewhat unusual style that relies on extending plays to open receivers or scramble, he needs more consistency on the professional level.

Given the makeup of the depth chart, it is unlikely that Lance will be used often during the regular season except some injuriess to Dak Prescott and Rush, so the best move would be learning from the preseason and working to improve. The remnants of the puting for the quarterback include lessons learned and a number of replays to have a closer look.
