At a press conference at Mar-a-Lago former President Donald Trump told a story about an alleged helicopter emergency with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. However, Brown stated he had not been in a helicopter with Trump. The issue was brought up in light of questions about Vice President Kamala Harris’ prior relationship with Brown.

It appears Trump may have confused Willie Brown for former California Governor Jerry Brown. In November 2018, Trump toured wildfire damage in California via helicopter, alongside Jerry Brown. Jerry Brown’s press secretary and current Governor of California Gavin Newsom, who was also present, both recalled that the 2018 tour did not encounter any emergency landing.

The mixup contributes another layer to the discursive context surrounding Harris, as Trump he used the speech to attack the Vice President, claiming Willie Brown was her adversary. This mistake underlines the tangled nature of political history and the inexactness of these topics.
