Vince Vaughn Stars in Eccentric Series Bad Monkey

During a recent A-List Interview with WGN Entertainment Reporter Dean Richards, actor Vince Vaughn has talked about his new Apple TV+ series “Bad Monkey.” The comedy television series is an adaptation of the Carl Hiaasen’s 2013 book. The show has Vaughn as its main character, Andrew Yancy, a former Miami police detective who now works as a Florida Keys health inspector. The first two instalments are available for streaming, and the viewers have a chance to see an eccentric combination of mystery and comedy genres combined with the vibrancy of the Florida Keys.

The programme follows Yancy’s search for a missing arm proven to exist when a tourist is deep-sea fishing. The show is a blend of Vaughn’s usual snarky and charming attitude and a Tom Petty-inspired score to make it stand out from the rest. Emmy award winner Bill Lawrence developed the comedy mystery, and it is his take on detective shows, which are usually dark and gloomy. Even though comedy and politically incorrect jokes have masked the storyline, “Bad Monkey” is not a typical detective show. Real estate fraud, Medicare fraud, and numerous colourful characters, ranging from a voodoo priestess to a small monkey, add to the charm of the series. Also, the show stands out visually as it is well-lit and takes place in the sun and contrasts with the drab palettes usually featured in detective series.

Meredith Hagner, who plays a character on the brink of comedy and danger, and Rob Delaney, who is known for his stand-up comedy but not this character, have joined Vaughn. While Vaughn is indeed excellent in the protagonist role, an insufficiently appreciated Nowicki gives the book life in his voice-over performance.

Clearly, the show is not a synonym for suspense, but it is a great opportunity for audiences to see that character comedies can be a lot of fun. It is not a thrilling show but a light-hearted series that embraces the beauty of its setting and its eccentric characters. Hopefully, “Bad Monkey” will inspire future series to break the mould by combining comedy and mystery in their programmes. The show is a nice addition to the 2021 season, not least because it showcases Vince Vaughn’s versatility and the exciting time to be had in the evolving television industry.
